Renaud Manguette & Père
In the Manguette family, I first ask for the son (Renaud), and only then for the father (Daniel). It was in response to his son’s passion that Daniel Manguette, a landscape gardening entrepreneur, turned his life upside down and had a winery built in 2024 in an annex of the family home. Trained in the Jura and later honing his skills with pioneering winemakers in France (including Fabien Jouve) and abroad, Renaud works according to the principles of urban wineries — sourcing grapes from biodynamic growers, with vinification and ageing carried out in-house. The difference is that he is not based in a city, but in the countryside, in the village of La Gleize in the province of Liège. With a production of around 5,000 bottles per year, Renaud describes his wines as “natural, yet clean and precise” — which is why, after a vinification without additives, he adds only a very small amount of sulphites at bottling.
Rodje du L'Gléhe
For his grape supply, Renaud Manguette can count on solid partnerships: here, with Domaine de l'Envol in Alsace for Pinot Noir and Domaine Frédéric Berne in Beaujolais for Gamay, two grape varieties blended equally in Rodje du L'Gléhe (translation: Red from La Gleize). Gamay and Pinot Noir underwent semi-carbonic maceration to obtain this crisp juice with a lovely roundness on the palate. A year of ageing in barrels has perfected its structure.
