Domaine du Poujol
Set about twenty kilometres from Montpellier, the Poujol vineyard was bought in 2016 by Brussels real-estate developer Eddy Hartung from an enthusiastic British couple, Kim and Robert Cripps. His son Laurent runs the vineyard: ten hectares of vines in production (with nine grape varieties), surrounded by 47 hectares of forests and scrubland - the landscape is breath-taking! The Hartung family has embarked upon the process of converting to organic while maintaining the biodynamic practices applied by the former owners.
We really fell for this superb cuvée, which led us to the Poujol vineyard. It is made using a grape variety that is losing ground: Carignan Blanc (barely 300 hectares throughout France), here planted on slopes. The vines are over fifty years old and the grapes are harvested manually. This wine was matured in acacia casks for nine months.
Pale yellow robe with golden tints.
Nose marked by aromas of white flowers and yellow fruit.
Silky and dense in the mouth, full of freshness. Notes of beeswax (linked to the choice of casks) and ripe fruit at the finish.
Pairs well with white meats in sauce.
