What can you say about Damien Briard? A permanently-erupting volcano… his voice is strong, his opinions are strong, everything is strong. So obviously, he hasn’t only made friends in this winemaking environment in the Bordeaux region, which still remains very cosy. The ultimate provocation: this winemaker from Namur makes his red wines the Beaujolais way, producing supple, elegant wines “sur le fruit”, an expression used to refer to wine that is still fairly young and hence fruity. His Bordeaux wines are unusual, to say the least: in the land of over-extraction, he is the king of heretics. He is also an endearing and gifted winemaker who keeps both feet firmly on the ground because he is well aware that nothing can ever be taken for granted. His estate is called Agape: could there ever be a better invitation to a party?
Direct pressing of the grapes (rather than short skin maceration, the most common practice in Bordeaux), static settling, low-temperature vinification to preserve the aromatic potential, matured on lees for three months. This wine is only slightly filtered and may contain small yeast residues, which have no impact on its taste.
Light salmon-pink robe.
Fruity (evoking blackcurrant in particular) and spicy. Aromas of grenadine.
"Crunchy" in the mouth, where red and black fruits dominate. Amylic notes (fruit drops) in the finish.
As an aperitif or with a barbecue among friends.
