Yield less than 12 hl/ha: a complicated year but a high-flying Église.
Fruity - Voluptuous
Domaine de la Coume Majou
Many success stories started in a garage. Luc Charlier’s story is written there daily, because the garage-shed of his small village house in Corneilla-de-la-Rivière holds all his winemaking equipment. This is where a minor miracle has occurred every year since 2005. In the region, he is pointed out as "the Belgian who makes fruity wines without wood". Domaine de la Coume Majou enthusiasts will tell you: this former kidney specialist produces outstanding Roussillon wines.
L'Église de la Coume Majou
The one explains the other: Luc Charlier lives at 11, la rue de l’Église, just a few steps from the church tower in Corneilla-de-la-Rivière, but if you’re looking for him, you should know that there is no vineyard sign or name on his doorbell…
Exceptionally, this Église 2014 does not contain any Syrah. Here is Luc’s explanation: "In 2014, for the first time in thirteen years of wine making, I suffered mildew. I refuse copper and do not use any artificial products. That year, a cryptogamic disease caught up with me: my hard luck. There was no Syrah, or only very little, hardly any Carignan and only the Maury Grenache escaped. So I decided not to produce a Cuvée Majou 2014 at all, but instead to focus on a very high quality Église 2014, mostly well ripened Grenache with a little Carignan."
The grapes are stemmed and crushed. The maceration process lasted about thirty days. The press wine was reincorporated. The wine is matured in stainless steel tanks - an unbreakable rule at Coume Majou. Good to know: Luc Charlier only adds sulphur when the grapes are first harvested, so the sulphite content is extremely low.
