Monte do Além
Situated in the Algarve, in southern Portugal, this vineyard was built up from scratch by Vinciane Nieuwenhuys from Brussels, around an old farm converted as a second family residence. It is her son Quentin, who lives on the estate with his small family, who now takes care of its daily management. Six hectares of vines have been planted over several years: 5 hectares of red grapes and 1 hectare of white grapes. No synthetic products, fungicides, insecticides or chemical weed killers are used in Monte do Além. Since the 2019 vintage, the wines have been certified organic, and Vinciane has simultaneously embarked on the path of biodynamic farming, with the firm intention of obtaining certification.
Monte do Além 2013
The grapes are harvested by hand (average yield of 35 hl/ha) and are taken to the wine cellar in small crates, where they are stemmed and crushed before being transferred to the tanks by gravity flow. The wine is matured in French oak casks (30% new casks every year). This powerful cuvée, the vineyard’s only blended wine, is made to be kept.
Vinciane limits the total SO2 content of the wines to less than 60 m/litre, which is substantially lower than the standards required by European regulations on organic vitiviniculture.
Intense dark red robe.
Bouquet dominated by black fruits. Notes of evolution.
Flavours of blackcurrant, cherries and plums. Slight notes of evolution (mushrooms, humus).
Meats in sauce, beef ragouts and small game.
