Monte do Além
Situated in the Algarve, in southern Portugal, this vineyard was built up from scratch by Vinciane Nieuwenhuys from Brussels and her husband Parviz, around an old farm converted as a second family residence. They planted 5.5 hectares of vines here over a period of several years, opting in favour of organic vitiviniculture (Ecocert certification process began in 2011). Consequently, no synthetic substances, fungicides, insecticides or chemical weed-killers are to be found at Monte do Além. The wine cellar was built in 2009.
This was daring in two ways: on the one hand planting one of the oldest Médoc grape varieties in Portuguese soil and on the other, vinifying it as a single variety. The result is an indisputable success, since the sunny Algarve climate is perfect for this relatively late variety, the last to be harvested.
Manual harvesting in crates. Vinification by plot, with regular pumping over. Matured for one year in two-wine casks.
Dark red robe. Fine tears on the glass.
Intense nose, dominated by black fruits.
Plump in the mouth, tannins already very soft, fine length.
A saddle of hare, a saddle of lamb or... a chocolate dessert.
Decant one hour before tasting.
17-18°C. Decant 1 to 2h before tasting. Good aging potential.
